With all the misinformation out there about diet and exercise, it can be hard to know what to do or whose advice to follow. All I am doing here is relaying what worked for me .
About 6 months ago, i’d get a stitch after about 10 minutes whenever I went for a run. I’ve never really been overweight at all but obviously I was not in tip top shape. And feeling a sharp pain on your stomach every time you go out for a run is de-motivating and depressing.
It also makes you feel as if you are never going to be able to run longer. I’d started with a marathon in mind but at times, 10K would have been a miracle.
After trying everything I could think of, I ended up seeing massive improvement with consistent action on these 2 points:
- Flexibility of my Hip Flexors
- Improved Diet
Working on my Hip Flexors gave me mobility, smoothness and posture.
So, whatever your level now, you need to focus on the below to be able to run longer than now.
How to run longer – You Must Increase Mobility
Stiff hamstrings and hip flexors are your worst enemy. Flexibility can help you keep the correct running form and prevent injuries. Now, while not everyone is born with the same level of flexibility, this can be learned and improved on. For now focus on your hip flexors as they are vital to your overall health and performance.
How to run longer – Stop Unwanted Movements
Sometimes we are unaware of the movements that are eating up our precious energy when we are running. This is a common mistake that many runners make. Movements such as flailing your arms about, taking too big of a stride and low cadence can cause you to use up extra energy and cause you to burnout faster. Try to identify unnecessary movements that you are making and stop doing it. You will soon realize that it will improve your endurance.
How to run longer – Good Posture
If you truly want to be able to run longer and faster, then great posture is not an option. It’s a must. You can always practice this by pressing your back and pulling your body straight upright. Always maintain your form and being able to do that comes back to having excellent hip flexors.
How to run longer – Consume Macronutrients
While we are mainly about exercise and form, you cannot deny that diet plays a huge role in becoming a better runner.
Macronutrients are quite often mentioned as very important foods in achieving high enough levels of good nutrition for runners; including good cholesterol, complex carbohydrates and of course, protein. Macronutrients give you the energy to keep running.
